more gregg fleishman

Like anything, the more you look, the more you learn, yes, even if you are watching "The Real Housewives of Orange County". Well, here is some more (just from the surface, go to the website to dig deeper...) from the "Real Inventor of Culver City"....
I want the bike AND the Nikes. I think this photo is circa 1984?
Nope, 1990.

Oh YEAH!

Killer.

Getting weirder, I like it, Bucky would like it too.

Scale model.

Full size, very cool.

More models, more ideas.

I hate to say it, but the furniture is starting to look a little less interesting, more decorative, when compared to his other projects....

Combining ideas.

Gregg is on the far left, looks like he grew up around modernism.

Getting farther out there.

WAY out there.

Thanks Gregg!

gregg fleishman kids chair

We were trying get O-R-G-A-N-E-Z-I-Z-E-D in storage the other day, and while looking at our literal pile of kids chairs, I spotted one on my favorites by Gregg (don't forget the extra G!) Fleishman and decided to take a few pics for a post....

It's made of one piece of plywood that has been cut on the bandsaw (It probably is laser cut now if he is still making them) allowing pieces to be flexible yet still strong. It folds flat... should have taken a shot of that....

The legs, seat support, well, everything, is created by subtraction, and then held together by tension. Very interesting....

Branded signature, just incase you thought I had whipped this up in my non-existent wood shop.

From Gregg'ss website. More on Greg soon....

michael & gabby boyd's place

I braved the HEAVY snow
and huge slushy puddles at every corner
today to track down Elle Decor Italia,
(not such an easy thing to do, even in NYC, surprisingly)
because my good friend Michael told me he was in it....

He didn't tell me he was on the cover!!!
Great fold-out cover that shows the dining room and kitchen.

Behind the blue door.

The Man.

Great Room.

Entrance from the street.
All the gardens were designed by Michael.

Detail of the dining room with the usual suspects,
plus a sweet John McLaughlin painting
and a Andre Bloc chair
hiding behind Mr Prouve.

The library is amazing, really amazing.

Out back by the pool.

Great room looking towards the pool
and the Santa Monica Mountains.
You don't see it in this shoot,
but the view is sick too.

Charlotte Perriand door to the upstairs bathroom,
and an Eileen Grey stool,
Donald Judd plywood sculpture,
Rene Herbst chair,
Carlo Scarpa vase,
and on and on and on.....

Media room looking out.

Office detail.

Long shot from guest rooms to the master bedroom.

MB learnin'.

BR detail.

I told you the library was amazing.

Cozy sunny bedroom.

To learn more about this amazing collection
and historic house,
click on this link:
I would say it is the finest collection
of modernist objects and furniture in private hands today,
and those hands belong to two
of the nicest and generous
people I know....

kara walker eat your heart out

There is a Salvation Army down the street from me that I had never been in before. I always figured, why go in, I'm sure there are picker mutants waiting in line when it opens and practically living in there waiting for something, ANYTHING to show up. Bad attitude I know, but I've done my thrift time, and I now only enjoy them when far away from New York City, in the middle of nowhere. So, a few days ago, I finally walked in, and this is what I saw, huge cut-out silhouettes portraits ala Kara Walker of what look like rap musicians, or at least musicians from the mid to late 80s, early 90s.... Kara did her first silhouette in 1994.... I'm just sayin'....

This is how big they are.

Nice touch with the mike cord.

Very Kara, this one....

This guy is in a New Wave band, I just know it.

This is the token Rocker.

The display murals are kinda cool. This one is of the Chelsea Hotel.

I hope that bull takes out the two suits.

This one is my favorite. It looks like Biggie no?

Is it Biggie or an urban Alfred Hitchcock???

Ok Sal Arm visual team, this is a little much in so many ways....

So what have we learned here today kids, other than I have too much time on my hands? Well, maybe Kara Walker didn't get her inspiration from the late 18th century fad of cut paper portraits, but from a Salvation Army in Chelsea....

robert loughlin @ paul johnson trading gallery

Hum, head to the opening of the Whitney Biennial, or go see 500 paintings in one place by one artist? The latter please. Everyone has seen Robert's ubiquitous "Brute" paintings over the years...but 500 in one loft, all curated and hung by decorator to the art world stars Ricky Clifton? That happens WAY less than every two years....

The front of Mr Clifton's soccer shirt said "BIMBO", who knew he was into Mexican soccer???

Every wall was covered....

I really like the round format. These were all painted on old platters and chargers.

His Royal Gayness.

Wow, rare appearance of a cross cigarette....

These are all painted books, boxes and records, some which are hilarious!

Such as this one. Perfect, god, so perfect.

Skull and crossbone portraits.

I think Paul bought the giant foot at our show of Robert's work way back when.

Paul with his Robert shirt from 280 Modern's show from WAY, way back yonder. Love that shirt, I have two Robert gave me, one filthy, and one new.

Dirty Brute.

DADA wall.

Painted table tops.

Beautiful Blue Brute.

U Brute.

Big Black Tattoo.

Scary Brute Dream.

Red Target

Not my kind of trip....

Love this.

There was a big group of painted chairs too.

Last one, but if you want to see more, or buy, they are all for sale, contact Paul at http://www.johnsontradinggallery.com
