barbara jakobson: collector & patron of modernism

Barbara Jakobson
 Mapplethorpe
1977

I don't know
Barbara
very well, we chitchat at Modernism
once a year,
but I have always admired
her style.
I was digging through some old
auction catalogs
and came across this gem,
(from 2005)
the sale of a handful of
well-curated objects from her collection.
I included
a few
of my favorites below....

Her living room.

Amazing Kagan Sofa
1952
This sofa originally lived in a
Walter Gropius home
in
Lincoln, Massachusetts.
Wonder where it lives now???
(It sold for $192,00.00!!!)

Peter Halley
"Delayed Reaction"
1989
with 2
Frank Gehry
"Sitting Beaver"
prototypes.

Victor Gruen
Ceiling lamp from
"Barton's Bonbonniere"
1941

Barton's
MOMA
called it a
"gay and attractive modern shop"

Horst P. Horst
"Barbara Jakobson in a 1952 Christian Dior dress"
1984

Fritz Glarner
"Relational Painting"
1951

The balcony of her apartment.
Nice to have a balcony in your apartment, no?

Marcello Fantoni
"A Glazed Creamic Three-Element Vase"
1956
(A former friend, Terry K. ended up with this,
it's huge, almost 3 feet tall.)

Sweet Lord.
Carlo Mollino
"A Brass and Resin-flez Upholstered Chair"
1950
These chair were made by Carlo
for Gio Ponti's daughter
 Lisa, as a wedding gift.
Only 6 were made.
My friends
have one.
Bastards!

  1. Great photos! Thanks for including the Gruen light. I recently found an amazing shot of Barton's Bonbonniere from a 1952 Architectural Forum, Barton's, and have been wondering what had become of those amazing fixtures.
