doyle lane pottery

My friend Gerard O'Brien of ReForm gallery in Los Angeles introduced me to the work of Doyle Lane late one night at his gallery after an opening. As we were sitting around a large table having a few cocktails and maybe a smoke, he snuck off and pulled a few pots out of some secret hiding spot in his back office, acting like he was showing me his secret stash, which he was. He couldn't keep the secret, and either could I, because I immediately bought 3 or 4 pieces from him that night.  I've only been able to find 3 or 4 more pots over the years (they have to be a different glaze and size than ones I already have, but still, they are very hard to find). They rarely, if ever, show up on the East Coast which makes it even harder. Also, once you find one you, don't want to sell it. They are like little jewels....

  5. I have an extensive collection of Doyle Lane works. His clay paintings are even more exciting than the weed pots. I built a rather nice FreeWeb site with a variety of examples of his work, ranging from weed pots and clay paintings to jewelry. But, I didn't know the rule about inactivity of FreeWebs and they took it down. :( I still have all the photos, so I may build it again if I can manage the time.

  6. Doyle was an old friend of mine and presented me with many examples of his work, including, small jewelry boxes with clay painting encased tops, weed pots, clay fish and bird figures, clay paintings, pots, etc. The one prized possession from Doyle I treasure, is what he said was his favorite clay painting and piece of art work. It is accompained by an artist's show poster which features it and signed by Doyle. He was such a humble and cheerful friend and sorely missed. I have a nice collection of his work but find it exceedingly difficult to find more of his work any longer.

  8. I have an opportunity to buy 3 but unfortunately at top dollar ( I think) $350 each. great colors orange and aqua... do I go for it? I would not hesitate if I had a disposable art fund but it would be a stretch right now?
