I went to my friend

Robert Loughlin's

memorial today

in the Meat Packing District.

Robert would have loved the location for many reasons.

It's hard not to make inappropriate jokes

when talking about Robert,

because he said whatever he thought,

whenever he thought it,

regardless of who, whom,

or "what"

might hear it.

Anyway,

it was sad yet inspiring afternoon.

I saw a lot of amzing old friends,

some I had not seen in years.

My only regret was that it

wasn't held in a bigger spot,

I heard that some people couldn't get in,

and that is sad to me....

Anyway,

here are some pics of the gathering....

Alan Moss spoke.

He was looking sharp.

Alan was a big influence on Robert,

as was Robert on him.

Thomas O'Brien of

Aero

spoke. He and his crew organized the

whole event.

They did and outstanding job.

Big thanks to the SoHo House too.

Gary's speech was touching,

and very Gary.

He told some amazing stories,

many that I had never heard before.

Thanks Gary,

you were great, and I can't imagine how

hard this has been for you....

These pictures greeted you when you got off the elevator.

I don't know who did this,

I am assuming Thomas's team,

but if I can give specific credit please

let me know.

I loved seeing the amazing blow-ups

of the vintage photos

of Robert.

We were fond of the same style of hat....

The white vase is an unfinished piece Robert

New York City lost something vital when we lost Robert....

I hesitantly include this,

but as friends and I

went to commiserate

over a few beers,

I looked out the window,

and the hair stood up on the back of my neck.

I thought for more than just a second

that it was Robert

just outside the bar....

In my mind it was,

if just for those few seconds,

really Robert there,

laughing, smoking and drinking a beer.

I came across some research materials

I had accumulated on one of my

favorite designers,

Dr. Peter Schlumbohm.

I just love saying his name!

Seriously,

I could say it over and over and over again....

Anyway,

I went bat shit years ago buying-up

anything I could find on him.

So discovering this brochure

again yesterday

made me go look at the pieces I had

of his in storage.

Great stuff, so cool.

Maybe

I should do the mini-exhibition I had

planned years ago....

Anyway,

he was nutz and I love him.

it's worth the read....

Funny and smart that Peter.

If you don't know him,

you will recognize the coffee maker

he designed in

the man's thought bubble above.

You've seen it a million times.

It made Peter a very rich man.

This design is just a sliver of

This is the best I could come up with.

There are some grey areas.

I included only books that

Ed designed himself

(or occasionally with someone else).

Portfolios,

such as "Stains"

that many people include as one of his

"books",

I have not, because it seems more of a portfolio

than a book.

Same goes for

I look through auction catalogs

almost everyday.

I preview auctions online every week.

But nothing beats

getting your ass up out of the

Ion chair

and over to the actual auction house.

A prime example of why is the above piece.

I looked at it in the catalog for maybe 1 second.

Just a hideous print of some poodles.

I didn't even bother to read the description.

So you can imagine my surprise

when I walked into

Phillips Uptown

and saw this:

Hell yeah!

A giant RUG?

I thought it was a tiny shitty painting.

This thing is so horribly bad that I

LOVE it!

If I lived in an all concrete bunker in Berlin,

I would buy this thang so quickly,

and I am not even kidding.

How amazing would it look in this dudes pad:

The Poodles would be so at home here!

It makes you wanna take off all your clothes and

roll around with them doesn't it?

This recently walked in the door,

a Henry P. Glass prototype

folding chair.

Amazing right?

You may know Henry for his

"Swingline" children's furniture.

I believe this is an early version of the

"Cricket" folding chair.

Here is one Wright tried to sell

back in 2001.

Here is another version

of the "Cricket"

that he designed for Brown Jordan

in 1977.

Not sure if it went into production

or not,

I know I have never seen one.

Did you think it was a regular sized chair?

It's just a scale model.

It is a FANTASTIC book.

The faculty and student

roster from Black Mountain College

always amazes me.

Kenneth Snelson is one of the most

amazing of the student alumni

in my opinion.

You might even say that the student was really

the teacher as the

equally amazing Buckminster Fuller

would find out when he saw Kenneth's

early sculptures.

Some would even say the Master

used this encounter with Snelson's

work to alter the course of his own work,

Prices ranged from 1 dollar to $250,

Underrated? Maybe, he's definitely not overrated.

Overlooked? I think so.

I love me some Anthony Peter Smith either way.

I may even own one,

(more on that in another post)

and I'm pretty damn sure I sold one

not knowing what it was.

I wish the guy that bought it had just paid and walked out

the door

rather than announcing he was a Tony Smith scholar

and gloating that he believed the painted piece of

cardboard I had just sold him

for nothing was a maquette.

Ignorance is bliss,

but it was that little bit of bad news that

made me go out and buy this

book so many years ago.

If I were you, I'd go buy one too....

in Asheville yesterday while I was out
