Poor Lenny Bruce, poor butterflies. Oh these poor poor pieces of art. They look like they never have any free time to play.
Is this an "all that glitters is gold" situation? Are we supposed to forgive all the Mission kitsch because it's true Stickley and van Erp? I puzzled over these images, trying to figure out what makes everything look so chintzy and ersatz, and I guess it's all contextual. The rooms look like something in suburban tract housing, albeit crammed with millions in exceptional art arranged to look boring. For some reason I find the whole spread depressing.
