I was
again
Dig-Duggin'
in my library when
I came across this little booklet
that the
Bard Graduate Center
made for an exhibition they held
at
the 2006 Modernism Show.
Mr. Lustig is one of those
über talented
people who for some reason
never
really
got
his due....
He is mostly know for his
graphic work,
at least that is what I initially
knew him for.
A friend
collected
his book covers,
that was my first
exposure
to him.
"A Season in Hell"
by Arthur Rimbaud,
New Directions Publishing,
1945.
But he did some really
sharp
interiors too,
such as this one
for
his own
apartment
at
625 Park Avenue
in 1953.
His and his wife
Elaine's
apartment again.
I
Really
love this.
William Segal Apartment
Park Avenue
1952
(Notice the custom lighting;
his lighting is fantastic
as you will see as we move along....)
His office
on
East 58th Street,
1951.
More of his office,
again,
LOVE
the lighting.
Lightolier Showroom
1953
Lighting sketch,
this one ended up in his
office.
Love,
very Italian.
This,
I would
KILL
for.
Custom Standing Light
for
1949.
(This is all becoming clearer....
If you go to the above link,
you will see that Mr. Contini
was the
founding partner of
Gruen Associates, who did
Barton's Bonbonniere
and those
amazing hanging lamps....)
See
and
here.
Of course
he
did furniture,
but I don't like it
nearly as much as I do his
lighting.
Upholstered Chair
Paramount Furniture, Los Angeles
1949.
I saw one of these years ago
for sale,
but did not know what it was...
He also did some
interesting architecture.
Concrete Pavillion
(with Edgardo Contini)
1948
He even designed
a
helicopter!
Helicopter for Roteron Company
1944.
and great signage...
amazing fabric...
...and on and on and on.

Thanks so much - never heard of Lustig- what a treat and shame
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU for posting! I love seeing Lustig's work about the internet. He deserves much more prominence than he currently receives.
